The Holy Father Pope Francis has appointed Most Rev. Fortunatus Nwachukwu, the Titular Archbishop of Acquaviva and Apostolic Nuncio of the Antilles Episcopal Conference (AEC). According to a statement issued by the AEC Secretariat, Port of Spain, Trinidad, recently, Archbishop Nwachukwu’s appointment is along with his present position as the Apostolic Nuncio in Nicaragua, a member of the AEC.


Ordained a Catholic Priest on June 17, 1984, the Apostolic Nuncio is a priest of the Catholic diocese of Aba, Nigeria; and has a Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology and a Doctorate in Canon Law. He has served in the Apostolic Nunciatures in Ghana, Paraguay, Algeria; the United Nations (UN) offices and specialized institutions in Geneva, and at the Secretariat of State at the Vatican – section of Relations with states.

Between 2007 and 2012, Archbishop Nwachukwu was the Chief of Protocol of the Secretariat of State (Vatican). His first assignment as Head of Mission was in November 12, 2012, when he was appointed as Apostolic Nuncio (Holy See Ambassador) in Nicaragua. The Apostolic Nuncio speaks English, Spanish, French, Italian, German, Hebrew and Arab.
