FILM INDUSTRY, VERITABLE TOOL FOR EVANGELIZATION MISSION OF THE CHURCH

The Episcopal Chairman of the Communications Directorate of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Most Rev. Godfrey Onah has described the film industry as an invaluable tool for the evangelization apostolate of the Church in the country. He therefore called on Catholic artists to put their talents at the service of the Church as agents of evangelization.

Bishop Onah made this remarks in his address at the first Film Festival of the Catholic Church in the country, organized by Signis Nigeria, at the Holy Ghost Cathedral Church Conference Hall, Enugu, Enugu State, recently. The theme for the festival wasVideo Film for A culture of Peace and Justice.

According to the CBCN Episcopal Chairman, the film festival is an important innovation in the life of the Church adding that the maiden edition is a right step in the right direction. While pointing out that many talents abound in the Nigerian church, including  a good number who are members of the country’s Nollywood industry;  Bishop Onah declared: “The starting of a film festival for the Nigerian Church is indeed a welcome development that will help showcase the work of religious artists, producers, film makers and music videos artists in general.”

The CBCN Communications Directorate Chairman added: “By supporting local initiative like this, Signis Nigeria is indeed setting a pace as well as giving a platform from which many of our artists can have the opportunity to move to the next level in their careers”. He added: “This gathering today, first of its kind in the Nigerian church, is what we have longed for that will establish mutually beneficial relationships and lead to many collaborative possibilities.”  Bishop Onah’s message was delivered by Rev. Fr. Chris Anyanwu, the Director of Social Communications, Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN).

Earlier in his welcome address, the President of Signis Nigeria and Signis Africa, Rev. Fr. Walter Ihejirika reiterated the objectives of the association in using the film industry to include; facilitating the evangelization apostolate of the Church, opening a corridor for a synergy between the government and the Church in this perspective and encouraging Catholic professionals to become effective and efficient agents of evangelization in the country, through their profession.

He added that the primary aim of Signis Nigeria also include taking the film festival to the greatest heights and make it compatible with other internationally acclaimed festivals in the world. The Chairperson of the Local Organization Committee (LOC); Chief (Mrs.) Adaeze  Chiegbu noted that the goal of the film festival and involvement of the Catholic Church in the industry is to sanitize the country’s film industry and counter the negative impacts of some productions that have no moral Christian and societal values.
